Samantha Bell Sugarman received her law degree from the University of Illinois College of Law (magna cum laude). She also received her undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (summa cum laude), received University Honors of Bronze Tablet signifying a rank in the top 3% of her class, and was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa national honor society. Samantha began practicing law at McDermott Will & Emery until 2009 when she joined Griffin McCarthy & Rice LLP. 

Samantha completed an externship for the Honorable Judge John L. Coffey of the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit in the summer of 2005. During law school, she was a member of the University of Illinois Law Review, the National Frederick Green Moot Court team, and received the Rickert Award for Excellence in Advocacy.

Samantha served as the Chair of the Chicago Bar Association Domestic Relations Committee from 2017-2018.  She has been selected by her peers as an Illinois Rising Star in the area of Family Law every year since 2012.  In 2014, Samantha completed the Houston Family Law Trial Institute program, an intensive eight-day litigation seminar focused on advanced family law issues such as custody disputes and business evaluations. Samantha recently co-authored a chapter of the Illinois Institute for Continuing Legal Education’s handbook, “Illinois Family Law: Preliminary Considerations in Dissolution Actions,” entitled “Pleadings Under the Illinois Marriage and Dissolution of Marriage Act.”

Samantha has presented at seminars for the Chicago Bar Association regarding the collaborative process in domestic relations and for the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants regarding taking the deposition of an expert witness. 

Samantha has chosen to concentrate on domestic relations not only to assess and advise clients on their legal rights, but to compassionately guide them through an extremely trying period in their lives. For clients seeking an alternative to litigation, Samantha is a qualified practitioner of Collaborative Divorce and has experience navigating clients through collaborative and mediated divorces.  

Outside of her legal practice, Samantha is a member of the Executive Board of Bright Pink, a national non-profit organization that saves women’s lives from breast and ovarian cancer by empowering them to live proactively at a young age.
